Introduction

 

Department of Botany opened its BS Botany [4 Year] Programme in October, 2015, and currently more than 45 students are pursuing their careers in Plant Sciences. Creativity and innovation in academics also revolves around the awareness of the academic thoughts evolving in the world of academics across the world. One of the most important aspects of the semester system which provides maximum strength to the career of a graduate depends on how successfully a department knits together the contents of all the courses which it offers. Considering careers of graduates in the rapidly globalizing world, botany department has been designing its curricula in light of the best available guidelines including HEC and other established universities in Pakistan & Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

Botany department also draws some of its academic strength from three other sister departments including Biotechnology, Zoology, and Chemistry. This department foresees career success of its graduates in the spheres of agriculture, industry, academics and research. Success of an academic institution reflects the intellectual success of a community and nation. Establishing academic departments at the level of a university is indeed an undertaking of unprecedented scale. It invokes highest level of sincerity and dedication.

 

Vision

These are exciting times in plant sciences, which have been transformed in the last few decades. This department envisions:

 To strive for quality education in Botany and actualise excellence in producing and disseminating the knowledge of Plant Sciences, in order to contribute in human resource development in AJ & K and Pakistan

To encourage a clear, comprehensive and advanced mastery in the field of plant sciences

To provide basic principles of biological sciences with special reference to Botany and its applied branches.

Enabling the students to explore the intricacies of life forms at cellular, molecular and nano level

To sustain students’ motivation and enthusiasm and to help them not only to appreciate the beauty of different life forms but also to inspire them in the dissemination of the concept of biodiversity conservation.

To develop problem solving skills in students and encourage them to carry out innovative research projects thereby enkindling in them the spirit of knowledge creation

To become an independent, life-long learner.

To understand and apply key knowledge and concepts in Plant Science to enable continuing understanding of new techniques and discoveries in the subject area as well as appreciating novel uses for more traditional methods in Plant Science

To develop, design and carry out an independent piece of research

To critically analyse new theories and conceptual issues in Plant Science

*** Project work shall be completed by working outside the regular teaching hours. Project work shall be
carried out under the supervision of a teacher from department of Botany. A candidate may, however,
in certain cases be permitted to work on the project in an industrial/Research Organization on the
recommendation of the supervisor.

There will be an internal assessment and external assessment for the project work. The external
evaluation of the Project work is followed by presentation of work including dissertation and Viva Voce. The title and the credit with grade awarded for the program project will be entered in the grade
card issued by the university


Brief Introduction MSc Programme

 

Department of Botany started its two-year programme in M.Sc. Botany under semester system in February last year. The contents of prospective study are assembled in distinct courses which are distributed on four semesters. Along with strengthening the theoretical and practical foundations of students, the course work of the third semester in general and fourth semester in particular will strengthen research orientations of Master degree students.    

 

Eligibility for admissions in MSc Programme 

Students seeking admission in MSc programme must have completed their B.Sc. with at least 2nd division from an HEC recognized university with the subject of botany in combination with other science subjects.

Prospective outlook of the Scheme of Studies

The MSc programme should enable the students to be acquainted with the latest knowledge of the Plant Sciences. Department of Botany materialised this Scheme of Studies by taking guidance from the HEC guidelines for BS [honours] programme in Botany [revised version 2013], and from other national and international universities. We reviewed all the contents of various foundation courses, and along the course of revision made some necessary modifications and updates.

Brief Introduction of the MPhil Programme

Considering the potentials and scholarly pursuits of people in Kashmir in general and district Kotli in particular, Department of Botany has also undertaken the degree programmes in MPhil Botany. In MPhil, first two semesters are dedicated to strengthen the theoretical foundations of scholars and last two semesters are dedicated to refine the research expertise of candidates, on the basis of which M Phil scholars will produce a dissertation in the last semester.    

Eligibility for admission in MPhil 2-year programme 

Requirement for admission in this programme include sixteen years of education from recognised institutions with at least 45% marks in MSc or BS. Previous studies of candidates should also reflect the substantial knowledge of botany through their academic credentials.
